McNally international acclaim. Among his many publications (cowritten with his colleague and friend, Chev. Prince Rainier Will Not Abdicate

Monaco's 71-year-old Prince Rainier denied French weekly magazine Paris-Match report of December 19, 1994 that he was planning to abdicate after 45 years as sovereign of Monaco, the tiny Mediterranean principality. Rainier had double-bypass heart surgery in November. Rumors circulated then that he would abdicate in favor of his son, Prince Albert. However, in a statement issued December 22, Prince Rainier denied the report, saying, "This fantasy . . . was obviously inspired by the weekly magazine more out of concern for increasing its circulation than out of concern for the truth." Paris-Match reported that Monaco's police force has been issued "a secret order" to cancel all leaves in February and March and that the palace ordered new buttons for all official uniforms, which have carried Rainier's initials throughout his reign.

Monaco offers three Orders of Chivalry, the Order of Saint Charles, established by Prince Charles III of Monaco on March 15, 1858 to reward merit and acknowledge services rendered to the State and Prince; the Order of the Grimaldi, established by Prince Rainier in 1954 to reward individuals for the contributions in enhancing the prestige of the Principality; and the Order of the Crown, founded by Prince Rainier in 1960 to honor and reward outstanding services rendered personally to the Prince.
